Superintendent's Message

 Dear Winchester Families:

The month of November brings colder days and darker afternoons and a chance to spend time with family and friends. This week we honor our nation’s veterans and express our gratitude for their service and sacrifice. Later this month, we take time to express our gratitude for all the many blessings in our lives. We are very grateful for the gift of our wonderful students and colleagues in the Winchester Public Schools.

As our very successful fall sports team wrap up the season, we are so very proud of their incredible effort, sportsmanship, and drive. Congratulations to all athletes and coaches for one of our most successful seasons ever!

Here is some district news:

The School Start Time Study Committee is meeting to review ways we can move to a later middle and high school starting time for 2018-2019, in order to support health and wellness. A change in elementary start times is also likely, as we use a two-tiered bus system. All families and grade 6-12 students will receive a survey on this important topic. Please let your voice be heard! Here is a link to our School Start Time Study Group: School Start Time Study Committee. A community forum is also planned for 11/28/17.

The Winchester fall town meeting will vote on funding for our McCall Expansion Project. Additional classroom space at McCall is needed to address current shortfalls, projected enrollment increases, and program needs. Here is a link for more information: McCall Expansion Project.

Parents of students in grades 4-9 and 11 have received the 2017 MCAS test reports. Our district performance at all schools and all tests continues to be very strong and our relative scores place our schools and students among the very top in the state. However, it is important to know that the MCAS tests are only one of many ways we measure success and student achievement/progress. For more information on the MCAS tests, go to: MCAS 2017.

Led by school committee member Cindy Bohne, the district has been working on defining our district vision. Please hold the date of 1/11/18 for a forum on this topic. More information and the latest vision draft can be found here: WPS Vision Beacons.

My next superintendent chat will be held at Parkhurst in the School Committee room on 12/5/17 at 6:00 p.m.

With respect,

Judith A. Evans, Ed.D.
Superintendent
